Bug Out Bags + Beautiful Weather
February 4, 2025
The past two days have been absolutely gorgeous. I have noticed my peach trees coming alive which is exciting, and I can’t believe it’s already that time! Growing peaches in our climate can be a challenge as late frosts are often their downfall. We lost a lot of blooms to a late freeze last year even though we tried to cover them and do all the things. But I am ready for spring!! Spring is by far my favorite season and I think it’s under appreciated. Fall gets all the hype and the fancy coffee drinks. But spring is bursting with life and that feels triumphant after a cold, dreary winter.
Savannah has been working away on the greenhouse and we are both so excited for it to be done. We’re hoping that by the end of the week the whole thing will be closed in. I can’t wait to share the final result. This will be our first year growing in a greenhouse, and I’ve heard such great things about how much your production can increase by doing so. We’ll be starting our seeds in there so we’ve got to get it ready to go ASAP. It’s kind of a mess in there because it’s been storing some building materials. Hopefully we can get those out of there soon!
Today I have been working on cleaning the house and getting our “go bag” together. We aren’t doomsday preppers by any means but we’ve been working on getting our affairs in order since around the end of last year. Hurricane Helene and the LA fires have been very eye opening. Living off grid makes us more prepared than the average person but there are times when you’ve go to leave. So a “go bag” contains all the essentials if you were to need to leave your house quickly. There are lots of different opinions on what should be in one and I’m still working out the details for ours. Thankfully we already have a lot of lightweight backpacking gear that is perfect for a go bag. If there is any interest, I can let you guys know everything that we put in ours. We do have a blog post about emergency essentials to have at home.
Our dogs, Hazel (on the left) and Johnny Rose had an outfit change as we swapped out their Christmas-y plaid bandanas for these pink ones. They have quite the wardrobe of bandanas and they have multiple for each season. Both Savannah and I enjoy making them because it’s a pretty quick project and there is so much cute fabric out there. I have some Valentine’s themed fabric that I need to hurry up and turn into bandanas.
Hazel, our 9 year old cockapoo, has taken up an obsession with screens. I don’t know what changed but since living in this tiny house, she’s really aware of animals being on the tv. She barks at them and it’s funny but also a bit annoying. She even started watching things on our laptops. The other day she was trying to figure out where the animals went. She was looking all around the laptop and I picked her up to show her there weren’t any animals behind the tv either. She just doesn’t get it. I made the mistake of showing her a video of squirrels on my phone and now she stares at my phone too. As I write this now she is hovering over my keyboard and staring at my computer screen. She knows I’ll eventually cave and put on a YouTube video of squirrels.
If you didn’t catch this past Sunday’s video on YouTube, check it out below. We’re sharing different breakfast foods we premade for mornings when we’re in a hurry or unmotivated to cook something.
